CRIME!!!

There is no doubt that social media has put a spotlight on criminal activity, but it still seems like the number of local cases of carjackings, burglary, bank and business robberies, murder and vandalism has grown in recent years.  I have no doubt that hard drugs and mental illness contribute mightily. What do you think?

These numbers go through 2008. How often do they update these stats?

      • steven frisch says:

Bob. Im trying to find a more current set of stats I can use but it is remarkably difficult. I am wondering if any of your readers know if the County keeps trend data and reports on it to the public. I can find the annual Sheriffs Department report but that is just a re-cap of what happened last year not trend data.

Nationally, the crime rate has been going down steadily for over a decade. It was only when Trump started spouting off his campaign of hate, division, and indifference to the support of bigoted slugs, that we saw a rise in the crime rate in 2015, which some on this blog claimed didn’t, and never would, happen.

Now, in response to the lawlessness that he himself created, Trump is calling on a stronger police state to control it. It also accounts for the 60% and growing who are adamantly opposed to the minority’s new-found fascism, and have taken to the streets in mass to show their displeasure, resulting in more arrests, due to new conservative state laws which seek to undermine a citizens right to assemble.

In other words; once again the minority conservatives bite their own ass in an attempt to fix what they, themselves, created.

    • fish says:

Crime decreasing for the last decade which of course has prompted howls for more gun control from the usual suspects! Does the cognitive dissonance ever hurt Chris?

      &

I realize that it will take you out of an oh so satisfying rant but you might look up the “Ferguson Effect” as just a hint as to why there’s been an uptick in the numbers recently.

      • Chris Peterson says:

You’re barking up the wrong tree, ghoti. I live on a farm way out in the woods of the GNW, and I use my guns as intended; to protect my livestock, pets, and family from predators. (And as a vet, I have no problem using them.) I will add, though, I certainly don’t need an assault weapon to accomplish that, since I have no reason to believe that a large number of miscreants are soon to attack the home front.

And I also think you could easily include the “Ferguson Effect” within my statement above; unless you can show me that the uptick in death-by-cop has no more correlation to today’s political climate than to the increased use of camera phones.

But hey, any effort at furthering the education of liberals such as myself is surely welcome. I thank you for realizing that, if I don’t use your terminology, then I’m unaware of it.

        Cheers.

I’d be interested in knowing about all that crime that the former hotelier has caused during his 40 or so days in office. There has to be a Pulitzer in there somewhere for the intrepid journalist who makes that connection.

I will add, though, I certainly don’t need an assault weapon to accomplish that, since I have no reason to believe that a large number of miscreants are soon to attack the home front.

While their is always an element of “We’d really like it if the scary looking (usually described as assault style) guns didn’t exist” in any of the more pedestrian gun control efforts my comment was more general. Magazine capacity restrictions for handguns, background checks for ammunition, and other stupidities…..things that are not intended to have any beneficial effect but sure are swell for giving guys like Gavin Newsome something to print on the campaign literature.

          • Chris Peterson says:

            “40 days”?
So, I assume you think his year and a half campaign of bigoted projectile vomiting is no longer relevant? Not to mention that, with over 15 million hits on Google for “rise in crime since Trump campaign”, giving a Pulitzer for reporting such an obvious story would be like awarding the Nobel in mathematics for 1+1=2.

And how macho of you to make fun of people who have seen what these “scary looking” weapons do what they are designed to. One would have to assume that you’ve never used one in such a capacity. Or am I wrong, and you’re a member of the “well regulated militia” the Constitution spells out.

I also have no idea what you mean by “Magazine capacity restrictions for handguns.” Never heard of such a thing, but obviously, you’re the expert.

          • rl crabb says:

I don’t know about the crime rate going up because of Trump. The cases I’m talking about have occurred in Nevada County over the last five years or so, including the burglary and vandalism of my garage four years ago. And although we may have different people living here now, I don’t believe there has been much population growth in West Nevada County.

I know it upsets you Chris but Barack Obama was at the helm of the government during those 15 months. If you can show me the raft of prosecutions by the Trump campaign or Trump supporters I guess we can continue to chat about it.

I have been seeing quite a lot of crime committed by the left post election though.

            Just saying….

            sigh…

There nothing macho about it Chris. If you are indeed a “vet” I’m sure that you’re well aware that standard hunting rounds are far more powerful than the ammunition used for AR15 or AK type firearms. Just a statement of fact.

Simply darling of you to bring up the constitution though.

I also have no idea what you mean by “Magazine capacity restrictions for handguns.” Never heard of such a thing, but obviously, you’re the expert.

The State of California banned the sale of pistol magazines with a capacity greater than 10 rounds a number of years back. Magazines manufactured and owned prior to the date I mentioned (I don’t recall what date that was) were grandfathered in. You could posses them but you couldn’t transfer them. As of 2017 mere possession of what had been a legal item was prohibited as well.

Not an expert Chris. Don’t even own one of those “scary” looking firearms that “do so much damage” as you put it.

You may now return to the pearl clutching at your convenience.

Tell you what, fish, I’ll use my bolt action 30.06 deer rifle, and you take a smaller .223 caliber semi-automatic with a 30 round clip, and we’ll figure out who can hypothetically slaughter more grade school kids in five minutes or less.
            Stupid fucking argument.

And a rise in the crime rate since Sideshow Don started his campaign is factual, and has nothing to do with who was President, or dog catcher in Dubuque, Iowa, at the time. Of course, as long as the minority hold out that it’s not happening; you’re right, no such discussion makes any sense.
            Ciao.

Show some legitimate causation not mere correlation before you descend into full lefty flail mode mode…..you know…..preserve a shred of credibility.

            Why so cranky Chris?

          • Chris Peterson says:

            “Cranky”?

I guess that I’m tired of arguing with otherwise intelligent people over issues it doesn’t take a rocket surgeon to figure out. I’d rather think you were a troll, than think you actually believe half the shit you defend.

Guns for the insane, climate change denial, fracking earthquakes in OK, coal waste in streams, ignitable water in Kansas, assault weapons and 30 round mags just because, a war on 1.3 billion Muslims, another $54 billion to a military budget that already spends more than the next 7 nations combined, and a President that has less understanding of our nation, and the world, than you or I.

Your views really are a serious threat to the human race. If you’re not “cranky”, then you’re not paying attention.

      https://news.vice.com/story/the-white-house-is-already-skewing-crime-stats-to-fit-trumps-agenda

Regarding crime in Nevada County, when I moved here ~30 years ago it was pretty much Bedford Falls. It’s been trending Pottersville since then, largely due to the substance abuse problem: alcohol, meth, and heroin. Great local organizations are working hard to mitigate, but American society is sending so many off the deep end.

Nevada County is just a microcosm of a larger terrible reality of a country going off the rails. Mind-numbing substances, and the crime that follows, are the choice of so many as a result.

      Michael A.

      • Judith Lowry says:

        Michael,
Dawn Donaldson, Crissy Campbell, Drew Reynolds, Laura Wilcox, Pearlie Mae Feldman, Mike Markel, Hetty Williams, Shauneen Zupan, Susan Wallace, Mary Grace Tassone are just a few of the good people who were victimized in the twenty years since we moved here. Bless their souls.
Sure seems like an awful lot for such a sweet little community to bear.

      • steven frisch says:

Nevada County has a California adjusted poverty rate of 21% (federal poverty rate adjusted for housing cost)

Looking at unemployment and underemployment–although Nevada County is about average in California for unemployment it is in the top 10% of counties for underemployment, measured as people who work part time seeking full time work or people who have fallen off the end of the unemployment system and are no longer looking for work. Approximately 1 in 4 adults between the ages of 25-54 do not work.

If one looks at social mobility (measured as the ability of individuals to move upward or downward in status based on wealth, occupation, education, or some other social variable) Nevada County has amongst the lowest upward social mobility rate and appears to headed toward downward social mobility, compared to other California counties.

According to the California County Health rankings Nevada county has a higher death rate from suicide, gun related deaths and certain cancers (breast, prostate, liver disease and repository disease) than other counties.

Although Nevada County has a lower than average death rate from drug induced causes, it has a higher than average rate of drug use.

There are 916 Opioid prescription per 1,000 residents in Nevada County (that is a lot of opioids friends, although no where near the highest in the state.)

And as I stated before, property related crime has almost doubled in Nevada County in the last 25 years according to some admittedly dated statistics.

Although this ain’t a clear link there appears to be pretty strong anecdotal evidence that there is a clear link between poverty and lack of social mobility, underemployment, drug and alcohol abuse, property crime and early death.

Here is the conservative streak in me: if you get an education, get a job, wake up every morning and go to work, party for recreation rather than lifestyle, and live by the goddamn golden rule, we are all much better off….when did we forget that?

Somewhere in the universe, an opioid-addled angel just went straight and became bipartisan.

          • steven frisch says:

Fish if you, and at times people you hang with on-line, were not so busy judging people’s politics and views without actually having a conversation, and took the time and made the effort to find common ground, you would discover that there is much more common ground than thought by the idologues who blather and opine on line picking fights to momentarily raise their adrenaline levels.

Steve, if those are conservative traits, then we should all sign on immediately! I would call that five of the necessary life skills, regardless of your political leanings. I am intrigued why you would see those as conservative traits and how you would see getting everyone, everywhere to embrace them.

          • steven frisch says:

I agree with you John these are not conservative traits…they are life skills…I fell into the frame constructed by conservatives to define them as their own.

            Mea culpa.

These are life skills drilled into me by my super liberal, left wing, college professor father, and my hard working, pro-choice, women’s rights supporting mother.

As far as spreading the embrace of these values, I believe these are learned–if you want your children to be well educated demonstrate the value of life long learning every day, if you want them to work hard, work hard every day of your life and they will see it–etc.
