One More Summer Night

Yes, I know it’s too hot to do much of anything, but after the sun goes down, there is usually a little breeze coming down the Broad Street Canyon and it is actually quite pleasant. Come on down and get your certified organic R.L. Crabb products. It’s your last chance!

Reminds me of my little used comic book stand in the 5′ space between our apartment house on North Street and the Woolworth store in Willimantic, Connecticut, circa September 1949. People had never seen used comic books being sold, especially by a refugee kid fresh off the boat. I looked pretty much like the boy in your photo, and made a bit more than $5 cash money from this first venture into capitalism.

I never sold comics on a streetcorner, but a friend and I attempted to start a little theater using his 8mm shorts of Laurel & Hardy, etc. We had a big crowd for our opening, but one little kid went crying to his mommy that we ripped him off for the nickel admission. We were forced to shut down our enterprise and today, my friend lives on aid to the totally disabled, another casualty of a failed entitled system.
